Local Advice & Weather

Cairns temperatures are fairly consistent which is why it is beautiful one day and perfect the next!. Our mild winters begin around May and last through to mid October, the temperature usually stays around 26ºC during the day, falling to 14º at night along the Coast and 4º at higher altitudes on the Tablelands.

Its Paradise! Sunny blue tropical skies and clear waters splashing over sandy cays. There is virtually no humidity and a warm gentle sea breeze to keep you feeling fresh an is the perfect time for you to be here!
The Ocean temperatures are about the same as our swimming pools, between 22- 28 ºC, so you can swim all year around. The days are 12 hours long, with sunrise at 6am and sunset at 6pm.
During our summer months from November until April, the days lengthen so that the sun rises at 5am and sets at latest round 7pm.

The summer humidity rises sharply to 85% and although the temperature is still only about 30 - 32 ºC , the weather feels sticky. You will definitely need one of our air-conditioned cars during the summer !
Most resort pools have good temperature control using a shade cloth and when you are booking your accommodation check to see if it has air-conditioned bedrooms. You don't need it during the day, but it helps to turn on the air-con for a couple of hours at night to help you sleep.

Try to remember to drink plenty of water no matter what time of the year you come as dehydration is what knocks most people out. Aim to drink yourself (and especially any kids you have with you) at least 3 litres per day. The signs of dehydration can include nausea, headache, dizziness, for more info read these details.
When at the beaches make sure you swim in the local stinger net during "Stinger season" this is normally November through to May. Stingers breed upstream in the freshwater creeks and get washed down during the rainy season. So if it has not rained much yet, there probably aren't any, but its better safe than sorry. The golden rule is " if you see the stinger nets up -swim in them"
Do not swim in any creeks or estuaries with Crocodile warning signs - especially at night!
Apply mosquito repellant regularly especially at dawn and dusk when they are at their most active and of course if in doubt, ask a local - at least they don't bite!
clothing required in cairns

Best described as NOT MUCH.
Due to the warm nature of our climate you will never really get cold enough to need warm clothes, rather you will need cool cotton clothing that breathes.
So shorts, T shirts, thongs & sandals along with a good hat should be on hand are our local dress.
